The x-ray source and detector rotate around a center of rotation around the patient's head, and in this way baseline images or raw images are obtained. Software programs with complex algorithms and using primary raw data reconstruct the images from three dimensions and also enable volumetric presentation of the desired area.
Applications of CBCT
1- Implant treatment plan :
The most important application of CBCT is in the treatment plan and evaluation of the placement of dental implants. CBCT images make it possible to measure the height, width, and bone angle of the jaw, as well as to evaluate vital structures such as the dental nerve canal in the lower jaw and the position of the sinus and nose in the upper jaw.
2- Determining the location of the third molar or wisdom tooth:
Determining the relationship between the nerve canal of the mandibular tooth and the root of the molars is important when considering tooth extraction and trying to reduce the possible damage to the nerve that may lead to permanent loss of sensation on one side of the lower lip. And the marking of the path of the lower dental nerve provides a proper observation of the relationship between the molar and the nerve canal.
3- Determining the position of the hidden and unerupted tooth:
CBCT is helpful in determining the exact position of the implanted tooth for better and faster surgical access, as well as its connection with the adjacent roots and checking the presence of an anomaly or lesion around the implanted tooth.
4- Examining the temporomandibular joint By providing:
three-dimensional images of the jaw joint and the surrounding structures, CBCT imaging helps a lot in the proper treatment plan for patients with jaw joint symptoms and signs such as joint pain and noise.
5- Examining pathological lesions:
CBCT scans are helpful in evaluating the location and dimensions of jaw and facial lesions and accurately show the impact of the lesion on the adjacent teeth as well as on the vital structures.
